This morning we took the train to the Batu Caves. These used to only be accessible by bus but the train now runs you pretty much to the front door. They are said to be 400 million years old and once used as shelter by the Orang-asli people (original tribal inhabitants of the area). Now it houses loads of Hindu shrines and you have to walk 272 steps to the main cave (see pic) Worth it though! The lime stove formations were amazing and the cavern that housed the central temple was the biggest I've ever been to, it must have been at least 70-80 metres tall. The complex is one of the biggest Hindu temples outside India, and justifiably famous. There were little monkeys everywhere running up and down the walls of the cave and on the temples. We then got off at Sentral Station and headed to the national museum. It was a pretty good one and detailed Malaysian history from the stone age to the present day as well as ambitions for the future including becoming an officially recognised 'developed' country by 2020. A tropical downpour/deluge (which we have every afternoon) meant we stayed a little longer than intended! Nonetheless we managed to make it back to our KL local 'Reggae Bar' in time for a few reviving beers within happy hour! Off to the highlands tomorrow for a change of scenery and taste of rural life.
