Today we set out to explore KL. We wanted to go to the Lake Gardens to visit the bird park and orchid and hibiscus gardens. We firstly passed by the old station noted for its superb architecture and is where Ian's dad stayed when he came here earlier this year (hi Keith!). We then passed by the tallest flagpole in the world (reportedly) and saw a lot of cool Islamic buildings with intricate decoration. After becoming somewhat lost we eventually regained our bearings and found the bird enclosure. This was no ordinary aviary! It took nearly 3 hours to walk round and had a huge collection of exotic (and less exotic birds) including (you guessed it) peacocks, hornbills, storks, ibis, tonnes of parrots, cassowaries, egrets, owls and kites. As you can imagine, Howellsey was in heaven! The birds were generally very accessible, wandering and flying about in their huge aviary. They seem so much more colourful than British birds. We then went across to the hibiscus and orchid gardens, which would have been a photographers dream has we not ran out of batteries! Doh! We walked home via the national mosque and museum of Islamic art, and managed to spot a couple of the monkeys we kept being told not to feed. Very cute from a distance! We went for tea at a local food court and had 'chicken rice' with lemon and sesame sauces and satay. It was amazing and so cheap! We're now back at the hostel deciding on what we should do tomorrow and whether to spend an extra day here before moving on to the Cameron Highlands... Decisions decisions!
