Our third day in Georgetown and what a day! We went to Cheong Fatt Tze's mansion in the morning and it was spectacular. Our guide was amazing and made the tour really fun and informative. There was so much to see and so much history behind the house. The mansion's floor plan is essentially Chinese and many of the features of it are based on the concepts of feng shui. Still it's quite an eclectic place and the floor tiles are from Stoke-on-Trent (where else?!) and the cast iron works are Scottish. Cheong Fatt Tze was dubbed 'the Rockerfeller of the east' for his vast fortune making skills. You can even stay in the mansion's heritage boutique rooms now, each room having it's own name and theme (perhaps next time!) Amazing! After this we walked to Weld Quay to catch a bus out to Kek Lok Si temple where I appeared to become an instant hit with the tourists there (no idea why!). I will now be featuring in the photo albums of several Indian and Chinese families! The name 'Kek Lok Si' means 'temple of supreme bliss' and it was completed in 1930. There is a pagoda which is considered one of Malaysia's finest and is surrounded by 10,000 Buddhas. There was also a 30.2 metre bronze statue of Kuan Yin with amazing views over Georgetown. It was extremely colourful and the smell of incense followed you everywhere. While waiting (and looking quite confused) about getting the local bus back a very friendly old local dude adopted us and made sure we knew what we were doing and what sights we had to see while in Penang. So lovely, as all the Malaysians seem to be. Can't wait to go out in search of more yummy food for tea tonight. Early start tomorrow as we head to Langkawi and the last section of our Malaysian adventure! Yes, Toni, we know you told us not to but we're sneaking into Thailand this way so it's got to be done!
