I spent the entire day of 22nd July in my room on the ship, sick and sore and feeling sorry for myself. I managed to finally haul myself out of bed around 7pm for dinner and then for a quick walk around the Aswan souq with Mum and Dad.
The next day I was feeling a bit better and we got off the ship and were transferred to the Basma hotel. We were all immediately disappointed when we got there, because the magnificent pool, which was the reason we booked the hotel, was being repaired and was empty. We were now really far out of town and had nothing to do! To add insult to injury, they put us in these rooms right at the back of the hotel and we had to go up nine flights of stairs in the 45 degree heat. I already had a bad foot from my fall at Edfu and Mum and Dad are both in their 60's so this was highly inappropriate. I told the lady taking us up the stair this and she just laughed at me, including when I yelled at her and lost my temper.
We got to the rooms, which were worse than some hostels I've stayed in and the lady said, "You have the best view in the while hotel!"Mum said, "I don't give a s*** about the view, I'm not going up and down all those stairs in the heat every time I want to leave the room. Eventually Mum managed to complain her way into getting us moved to the 5th floor in the main hotel, where there was at least a lift and the rooms looked like they were actually worth the $120 US per night we had paid.
After that fiasco, we got a cab into town and went to McDonalds, had a little walk around and went back to the hotel. We had dinner at the hotel restaurant and went to bed early so we could wake up for our flight back to Cairo in the morning.
