We started to get rain last night and we woke up to our first rainy day of the trip this morning! It looks like it was settled in for a while so we just hung out at our place until early afternoon and hoped for a break in the weather. Around 3:15 the clouds broke and we decided to hop on the quad and drive to Halki and then on to Filoti which is in the hilly and mountainous center part of Naxos island. These towns were pretty quiet and empty and it looked like most places had already packed it in for the season. So we conituned up the steep and windy switch back roads up to Agia Maria which is a little church on top of a hill and is one area where you can start the steep hike up to the cave of Zeus. Due to the weather we had a late start to the day and would not be able to do the hike unfortunately.. I suggested maybe hiking up a bit of the way and checking out the view but its a good thing we didn't. Literally as soon as we got to the top and started debating on wether to start the hike, the rain started to come down! Its around a 25km drive home and we are at 850m above sea level at this point and on top of the mountain. It hailed and sleeted on us for the first 10mins of our way down and couldn't believe how fast the crazy weather came in! As we traveled back through the towns of Halki and Filoti, I can only imagine how silly and wet we looked for all the people who saw us! Once we got halfway back to our place, the weather started to ease up and we could actually see as it wasn't hailing and raining. We managed to get back just fine but what an adventure!! It started raining hard again around 6pm at our place which made it interesting to go out and grab dinner. It finally calmed down for a bit and managed to sneak over just before it started pouring down again! We had a wonderful with delicious house red wine (always get the house wine). It looking like its going to be a rainy and stormy night! Weather forecast looks good for the next week which is encouraging.
