We started our day in the morning by heading down to the bus station to catch the bus to the Palace of Knossos. It is definitely worth the visit and something everyone has to do when they go to Crete! Its hard to imagine that they were able to build an elaborate and complex palace in 1900BC. What is mostly left now are ruins, walls and rock that have eroded away (except for a few pillars in the north entrance, the throne room and other areas that were restored in the early 1900's) but there are enough pillars and structure remaining to be able to envision what it once was like! We then caught another bus and headed 25 mins south of Knossos in to the heart of the Iraklio wine country and spent the rest of the afternoon out there. We got dropped off in a very small village called Peza and we quickly learned we weren't exactly in the right spot and asked a local fruit/veggie store man if he knew where the Minos winery was. He and his friend didn't speak a word of English but we were able to show him the name where we wanted to go and they smiled at us and gave us the steering wheel sign! So off we hopped in to his pickup truck and he drove us a minute down the road and dropped of us off at the winery! We must add that we have been very impressed with the Greek hospitality in general and how nice everyone is! We sampled some local Cretan white and red wines and had a delicious lunch at a taverna down the road (they also didn't speak any English) and then headed back to Iraklio late afternoon. We must say, it was awesome getting out of the city and touristy areas and getting to enjoy some good Cretan food and wine!! We finished off the day walking around the center of Iraklio and had a bite to eat along the water front. This is it for Crete and we are taking the ferry tomorrow to Santorini!!
