So it turns out scuba diving just isn't for me.
My ears just could not cope with it.
I thought losing my hearing after an internal flight in China was a one off but clearly not and my god did they hurt for days. Even today they still ached and I dived/dove on Friday!
They were so sensitive last night when we went out with the crew for an after boat party. I had to leave early, or else sit with my fingers in my ears looking like a mental. Snorkelling is far better for my health!
I've also been sunscreen police too whilst I've been away. Not sitting in the sun in anything less than 30 and choosing the shade when I've not got it with me. Plus im refusing to spend too long out in the sun. Despite this I'm still pretty dark. Mums stupidly see through, easy to burn skin, combined with the pigment of dads makes mine so easy to tan.
Well done parents!
Anyway back to the boat
The weather was cloudy, rainy and miserable pretty much the whole time but we still had fun.
Despite it's reputation for being the party boat, it wasn't that bad.
I was allowed to sit quietly reading my book the first night, no problem.
Second night we were given fancy dress costumes and played stupid games made up by the crew. I got eliminated early so sat in the control room type thing with the captain and first mate (along with a really weird Dutch girl who just wouldn't go to bed)
Had a good laugh in there with Andy who had been on that boat for 11 days straight the poor b*****!
The next day the weather was pretty grim and the wind was so strong the boat rocked pretty hard.
We had half an hour snorkelling before we were hoiked out of the water and we made our way back to Airlie.
The waves were so rough, at least half the boat were being sick over the edges.
I was fine for the majority of the journey. Sat with Jimmy, the chef, (who's apparently been on mastercheg but after a spot of stalking, I'm not so sure) helped him prepare lunch and had a good old chat. Kinda vanished on him after that. I went downstairs to get my water bottle and suddenly threw up. It took me by surprise as I hadn't even been feeling sick.
Sent myself to bed after that until he came down and woke me up again
Saw some pretty amazing things on that trip, despite the awful weather.
Walking along Whitehaven beach I saw a baby shark and a sting/manta ray (I'm unsure of the difference). At night dolphins were always showing off beside the boat, as were shoals of silvery fish who occasionally would jump out of the water and make firework like patterns.
Underwater was just as pretty.
Breathing was difficult at first as panic of being in this weird new world set in, but it subsided.
The fish werent bothered by us and some even let you touch them. The coral was equally as weird. Some were harder than they looked and others were much more squishy. So strange.
Whilst I was submerged underwater I realised it didn't fill me with the excitement I thought it would. It confused me that actually, the bikes were far more fun!
Who couldn't predicted that?!
Snorkelling was still fantastic though. Even with the crew throwing fish food at our heads and seagulls dive bombing us. That made me feel more alive than the dream like state of being completely surrounded by water at the bottom of an ocean.
