When we got into Dresden we looked outside the train station and were a little disappointed, we didn't expect much and our first view wasn't promising. Berlin is nothing like I expected. There's not really that much evidence of the WWII destruction, it's been rebuilt almost completely. The buildings are a combination of old and new, with a lot of modern architecture. It's also a lot flatter and wider than I expected, there are only a handful of tall buildings, none of which are true skyscrapers. Our next stop on our journey north was in Hamburg. Hamburg is a port city so its very industrial and not necessarilly a good looking city. There are a lot of cathedrals to visit so we did the whole sight seeing thing in the morning. We just stopped into Frankfurt for lodging, we`re working our way up towards Scandinavia and we wanted to break up the train ride from southern Germany. Its a very American-style city and very business oriented, so it wasnt that spectacular to see. In the morning we took about a one hour tour of the old city but much of the city was bombed during the war and not a lot remained.

We made a quick stop in Triberg to see a little more of the Black Forest. Triberg is located in the heart of the forest so we got a better feel of the area. The two biggest cuckoo clocks in the world were supposed to be here but it turned out that they were both several miles outside town, so thanks to their tourist office for lying to us about that.
