So we cant dress up for Halloween? Then we will just go to Transylvania and find Dracula and call it a holiday. For those that dont know, Transylvania is actually a region in Romania, located in the center of the country. We stayed at a city called Brasov, which is a pretty big city, but the old part of the city is very medieval and well preserved and feels like a small village. The old part of the city actually feels a little bit like Prague, its a fun city to just walk around in and search the alleys. And it seems like every alley leads to a courtyard, most of which go nowhere but they all look really creepy. Unfortunately, none of the pictures look nearly as creepy as they are, so youll just have to take our word for it. We saved a lot of money here, because everything is dirt cheap. We went to a little shop to buy some sausage and she put two huge sausages on the scale and she said they cost two lei, which is about 33 cents. I thought she was kidding, she wasnt. The next day we went to a couple nearby cities called Bran and Rasnov. The Bran Castle is associated with Dracula, however it turns out that he definitely never lived there and may have only visited a couple times if any. But that doesn't matter because we treated it like he spent his whole life there, so I'm saying that I visited Draculas Castle. Regardless of the Dracula association, it was a really cool castle and it looked even better on Halloween because there was a mist all across themountain. As a sidenote of how cheap Romania is, our bus ticket from Brasnov to Bran was only 90 cents. The other city we visited that day was Rasnov, which is known for its hilltop fortress. There wasnt much to see in Rasnov other than the fortress, because it is only a small village, but it was still worth the trip. Our third day in Transylvania, we went to the city of Sighisoara, which has a well preserved citadel atop a hill overlooking the city and the old part of the city itself is actually a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This was the best city of the four for walking around, the citadel was very old and looks much the same as probably did five hundred years ago. But our best part about Sighisoara is that Vlad Tepes, better known to the western world as Dracula, was born in this village and we ate dinner in the house where he was born and lived in as a child. Even though we didnt get to dress up and go trick or treating, this was one of my better halloweens, you dont get to eat at Draculas house everyday. Oh, another funny note about Romania, is that its full of stray dogs, we actually saw a pack of about a dozen in Sighasoara. Apparently, the capital city of Bucharest is estimated to have about 100,000 stray dogs, and that number is not a typo. This country clearly has more of an eastern feel to it than the other countries weve vistited, except perhaps Hungary, and the poverty can definitely be seen by looking at the houses in the countryside from the train rides. However, it was interesting to see another side of the world which we dont see much as Americans. And it was a breath of fresh air to finally visit a place that hasn't yet been Americanized. Romania, and particularly the Transylvania region, is definitely an interesting place to visit.
