Füssen is located southwest of Munich about an hour away in the Bavarian Alps. Once we got into town we took a 5 minute bus to the base of a mountain valley and it was like a whole different world, there was snow everywhere. It seriously felt like we were in Narnia, the snowflakes were huge and they didn't seem real (and it hadn't been snowing anywhere else in Germany) and there were two fairy tale castles in view. These castles were built by King Ludwig II in the late 19th century and are two of the most magnificent in Europe. The most famous of the two castles is Neuschwanstein, more popularly known as the castle which Disney's Magical Kingdom castle was based. The hike from the valley to Neuschwanstein is about 40 minutes and everybody either has to walk or take a horse drawn carriage, needless to say, we walked. The next four hours were probably the most aesthetically pleasing we've encountered on this trip. That part of the Bavarian Alps can rival the best of the Swiss Alps and the Norway fjords. However, throw in the huge snow flakes and gigantic castles on tops of mountains, and I'm enclined to say the scenery is the best we've seen. It literally felt like we were in the middle of a fairy tale, it was surreal. Not only was the scenery beautiful, but the Neushwanstein Castle may be the most amazing man made structure I've seen to date. It's huge, it doesn't look real, and it's built on top of a mountain. We took a tour of the inside of the castle and the inside was almost as good as the outside, only about a third of the rooms were finished (Ludwig died before it was completed) but they are unbelievably ornate. For examle, the top of his bed looks like the top of a gothic church with lots of spirals, and it's so detailed it took four wood carvers over four years to complete the bed alone. But it's also very unusual, there is actually a room that looks like the inside of a cave, it was built with big fake stones and it really feels like you're in a cave, the door is actually a big stone. Back to the outside, one of the best views we had of the castle was from a bridge adjoining two nearby mountains, which we had to hike to. The bridge was built over a waterfall overlooking the castle, and I'm comfortable in saying it's the best scenery I've ever seen. Absolutely amazing. We then hiked down the mountain to the other castle in the valley. After seeing Neushwanstein, the other castle doesn't seem as spectacular, but it still may be my second favorite castle we've seen so far. These castles weren't really built to be strongholds like most castles in Europe, they were just built to look nice, and they do. And it keeps getting better, the valley also has a lake that is so clear it almost looks green. Definitely one of the more picturesque lakes we've seen. When we got back to Füssen it turns out the town has it's own castle, which wasn't nearly as nice as the other two, but it was worth visiting on its own. We also walked around the town a bit, Füssen is a very small town so we covered the whole city within a couple hours. But once again, Füssen proved to be another really fun city to walk around, like Bamberg it was another examle of a typical, pituresque Bavarian town.
