Joensuu was nothing more than a city we stopped to stay during our train tour of Finland. However, it is worth mentioning because our hostel inlcuded the best breakfast we've had since we've been in Europe. The breakfast buffet (and yes I'm blogging only about our food) was actually located in the hotel associated with our hostel. It had scrambled eggs (which you take for granted, so eat some tomorrow morning), potatoes, several types of sausage and bacon, some Finnish specialties, oatmeal, granola, yogurt, everything you can think of to put on a breakfast buffet. We ate enough to fill us for the rest of the day, and this has almost become a new feeding stragegy for us recently. We pay a little more than we usually do for a good breakfast buffet, and then gorge ourselves so we don't have to eat till dinner at about 7 or so, it's actually a money saver and I'll hopefully be implementing this strategy in the near future. A Finnish specialty worth mentioning is their berries, ligonberries and cloud berries. A lot of their dishes are served with ligonberries (similar to cranberries). Anyway, they had a berry concotion of ligonberries, cloudberries, and raspberries and I put that on granola and added yogurt, unbelievable. Food has become an idol to us recently since we've been budgeting so much in Scandinavia, which is so expensive. Let me put it this way, a typical candybar in Norway (the most expensive) is 22 Krona, which is about 3 Euro, which is about $4.50, what nerve. I almost want to call Snickers and demand them to remove their product from these shelves, it's revolting. Another thing you see alot of in Finland is Reindeer, which I also had with this buffet. So if any of your kids don't get presents for Christmas, tell them it's my fault because I ate Santa's reindeer...and they were delicious. Anyway, congratulations to Joensuu for getting on our map by providing an unbelievable breakfast.
