Day 149, 30 November 2012, Edinburgh - With our Edinburgh Passes finally expired (£155 of value from £83 spent), we were on our own today and didn't have to check out of the B&B until 11 am. Very slow morning indeed. Blessed with yet another fine, sunny, utterly freezing (0 degrees) day, we headed along the back streets to Charlotte Square and visited the National Trust's Georgian House property - on it's last open day til next March! Happy to be getting some value from our membership, we luxuriated in the beautifully decorated property - originally the "town" house of the Lamont family in the 1700s. Upstairs/Downstairs indeed. Even though the house is located in Edinburgh's posh, leafy "New Town", when it was built it still would not have had running water or bathrooms. Having been ridiculously busy the past three days we then wandered along Princes Street and enjoyed the Christmas atmosphere. Though it's still 25 days til Christmas, the amount of sales on is surreal - if it's 30% off now, they'll be giving it away after Christmas. Incidentally, Happy St Andrew's Day! The Patron Saint of Scotland was being honoured today, and so we felt honour bound to stop so James could have a pint of Belhaven's Best.... if for no other reason than it entered him in a draw to win a holiday to St Andrews and gave us the chance to defrost. Back into it and we went to the National Gallery and spent an hour or so poring over Rembrandts, Turners, Rubens and Van Dycks. We finally collected our bags from the hotel and settled into the pub with the cheapest fish and chips in Edinburgh - only £6.50 for 2 serves! A chance to sort photos and remember what we've been up to. Flying back to London at 9.30 pm - fingers crossed we'll be home and snug before we turn into pumpkins at midnight! Off to visit a friend we met in Jordan tomorrow - another county to tick off our list - here we come Hertfordshire!
