Day 122, 3 November 2012, Cambridge (University town), England - For today's adventure we took off to Cambridge and even made a detour to see a village with many thatched roofs and a very quaint pub... just like Midsomer Murders. No dead bodies were to be seen however. The weather was perfect and Cambridge was correspondingly busy. Business was booming for the punting fraternity and we took the opportunity to get out onto the River Cam for a tootle past the oldest, richest and most famous colleges of the University of Cambridge - Trinity, St John's and King's Colleges amongst them. The guide told many stories of the rivalry between the colleges and the one that struck us as particularly funny was about St John's - originally the richest college and Trinity (which became the richest during the Reformation and is now the 4th biggest landowner in the UK). Anyway, St John's was building a clock tower and as soon as Trinity heard about it they whipped up a wooden structure in less than 2 months and put a clock on it. Foiling St John's plans to have a clock on their beautiful stone building and leaving a blank circle where the clock should have gone. Due to local ordnances to prevent excessive bell tolling etc only one bell tower is allowed within each half mile or so. So Trinity won the race and their bell tolls twice every hour - once for St John's and once for Trinity. There is also a sculpture of an eagle on the front of St John's entrance foyer. The eagle has it's head turned because it can't bear to see Trinity. True story. Check out the photo album to see the building with a space for a face! Off to London tomorrow - will be talking to the weather gods tonight putting in our order for more blue sky and sunshine. (Thank goodness our ski clothes arrived after 16 weeks in transit... risk of hypothermia has been significantly reduced!)
