Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
We did not go on an organized tour today. We took about a half hour walk from the ship to downtown Belfast. Then we got on a local Hop On Hop Off bus that took us on a 90 minute route around Belfast. It was cloudy and cool, but no rain. Although the violence stopped in the early 1990's, Belfast is still a much divided city. There is a 17 foot wall separating the Catholic and Protestant residential areas. There is a gate between the two sides that is open during the day, bit closed at 8:00PM. On one side the Union Jack is flown from the houses and on the other side the Irish Republic flag is flown. The downtown shopping area is safe and non sectarian. We stopped for lunch in a pub and had fish and chips and a Guinness – toasting Karen’s sister’s successful surgery. The server asked us where we were going next. We told him Cobh. He asked where it was and we said in Southern Ireland. He gave a disdainful look and said, "Oh there". We walked around downtown for a while, spent the last of our British Pounds on some wine and toiletries and took the shuttle back to the ship.
