Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
Tournon is a small city along the Rhone. We took an hour waking tour where the guide struggled to show us much of interest. It was Sunday morning and the streets were pretty deserted. The rest of the morning was great. The included Viking tour was on an antique steam train up the Doux valley. It is a deep valley spanned with several aqueducts. The ride up and back lasted about an hour and a half. We spent the rest of the afternoon cruising down the Rhone heading for Avignon. On the way we stopped briefly in the town of Viviers for an hour guided tour after dinner where we were greeted smiles and "bonsoirs" from the people still dining at the outdoor cafes. We do enjoy our after dinner walks.
One thing we have noticed is the lack of much river traffic on both the Seine and Rhone as compared to the Danube and Rhine when we cruised a couple of years ago. The Captain said it was because France has decided to concentrate on rail transport, not river. It has made it much more efficient for river cruising – there are no waits at the locks.
