An early start for which I woke up late. Alison, a Cruise Critic member, had organised a tour and we needed to be off as early as possible. In the event, we all managed to get on the first tender.
After a brief look at the cathedral, German settlers monument and an umbrella statue (PM gets 2,500 mm of rain per annum), we went to a lookout. PM is a pretty scruffy looking town of about 200,000 inhabitants.
Then we drove to Puerto Varas, on the shore of Lago Llanquihue, Chile's second largest lake. After that we entered Vicente Perez Rosales National Park and drove past Petrohue River to Lago Todos Los Santos (All Saints Lake) and then on to Osorno Volcano. Here I took a chairlift up to the first level. It was pretty barren up there, but the top of the mountain was completely snow covered. On our way home, we stopped at Petrohue Falls, which were a little disappointing, as not much water flows through in the summer.
After a late lunch at a cafe with llamas outside, we went back to Puerto Varas, where Rob and I had a pisco sour. Then it was back to the port, where there was a long queue for the tenders (partly because everyone arrived at once and partly because one of the tenders had broken down). We all had to pass through port security, but no one was watching the monitor!
I'm amazed at how unexpectedly beautiful Chile is. It was a good day out. We lost both the pub and Syndicate quizzes by one point.
