We had moored in the harbour last night. During the port talks and other such things, we were under the impression it would be very cold, so everyone was dressed like Nanook of the North. It was really quite warm and I had to take my fleece off later in the day.
This is a tender port, which means that the ship moors offshore and the ship's tenders are used to transport us in to land. The tenders are actually the lifeboats. We were on the first tender of the day for our trip to the Otway Penguin Colony.
We travelled for about an hour and a quarter along gravel roads to the colony. The countryside was quite flat and we saw a variety of wildlife, eagles, jack rabbits, alpacas, rheas, geese and also sheep and cattle. The land is quite flat, fairly barren and in the distance are hills and snow capped mountains. During July, in the winter, there is about a metre of snow.
At the colony, we had to walk about a mile along gravel paths and boardwalks to where the penguins were. They are Magellan's Penguins. They're quite small and live in burrows. The soil is soft here, which makes burrowing easier. This is the time of year that they start to head back to sea. At it's peak, about 4500 penguins are on site, but as it's fairly large they're quite well spread out. I was quite disappointed by how few birds we actually saw, but I enjoyed the trip.
Back in town, we strolled around for a bit, then hit a bar for a local beer. We were still in coats, but many of the locals were in short sleeves! The town is OK, but not somewhere you'd want to rush back to. We saw the cathedral and local square. There's a strange monument on the sea front, and as you walk along the front, there are two derelict piers, which have now been taken over by gannets.
A fifth gold sticker from the Individual Quiz, with a shocking 12 points. Coral always asks the hardest questions. After watching the Jimmy James live telecast from the Curzon Theatre in Masquerades (not as good as last time and the theatre atmosphere was lacking), much to our surprise, we won a bottle of wine in the Majority Rules game. That's our tenth bottle of the cruise. We started well in the Syndicate Quiz and then went downhill swiftly.
