We had everything packed up ready to head off at 9am. The Germans came down to camp to say goodbye which was sad...would loved for them to come to Vrilya point with us all.
We drove to Bamaga to do s last stock up of food and fill the diesel up. Drove to cross the Jardine River by ferry again, Marty cursed the corrugated road!! Then another 28kms later we veered off to the right towards Vrilya Point. The road was not too bad, slightly corrugated until we got to the crystal creek log bridge crossing. It looked rickety and worn with old logs fallen down from past attempts. The boys got out to assess the path where the tyres would go along the logs. Then Marty was off, did it well with the guidance from Rod. Rod came next and also made it over with no difficulties. So our day looked good with our only concern of the bridge crossing done! We had 25kms to go and it was only early, but then the bloody corrogations started again and we travelled on average speeds of 25km/hr. It took us about and hour and a bit to arrive to Vrilya Point! Was slow going and we noticed near the end of the drive a loud rattle which was worrying Marty. We arrived at Vrilya Point around 1:30pm and we were all so taken away with the view of the ocean and beach. The water was a spectacular blue and the sand fine and light in color. We only drove up a short distance where we came upon our camp site. It was well shaded and right on the beach. We had a quick lunch, set up camp then took a swim, only in the shallow part if the waters were we could see shadows if needed!
The arvo went quick and before we knew it we were given a wonderful treat of a gorgeous sunset. Best we've probably seen in a while with the sun reflecting off the ocean then once set the sky turned an array of colors from purple, pink and orange.
Marty saw some fish jumping so decided to chuck a line in, within seconds he had caught a queen fish! Everyone got eager and Rod put a line in while Angie had a go with her cast net. Bloody crazy Ang in the water at sunset up above her knees in water bloody throwing a cast net. Then we heard her yell out she's caught some! She'd caught 3, then another 10 mins and she yelled out again. By the time they'd finished, Marty had caught 1, Angie caught 6 (with 4 different species!), and Rod none :(
Once we'd had tea and were just about to get the girls to bed Marty noticed a rejection of eyes staring back at him from the light of his torch. We went up to investigate to find it was a small croc just over a meter long. It was only a baby really and was very placid just swimming up and down the shallows of the water. Then it disappeared into the ocean and we were all so excited to finally get a good look at a croc in the ocean!! Not a urban myth after all....lol.
We retired for the night after a chat around the camp fire. It is a beautiful place here, nice and relaxing. We are only meant to be staying for two nights but we have all hinted that maybe more is required...
