Day 48. Estes Park, Colorado.
Saw some elk today, and some wild turkeys! But, still on the look out for black bears. Despite all the warnings and bear-proof bins, they are proving decidedly difficult to spot.
First chilly day on the bikes today. Seems like autumn (or fall) is on its way. Unfortunately this was also the day Jane's heated hand grips decided to stop working. Hopefully we can fix them before we head further north.
The first part of the route followed the Colorado River Heads Scenic Byway, and involved another off-road section. Not too gravelly this time.
We then followed the Trail Ridge Road through the Rocky Mountain National Park, and across the Continental Divide. This is the highest continuous paved road in the United States. It was pretty cold at the high point (12,183 feet), and there was snow on the ground.
We are now staying in the town of Estes Park, next to the National Park, for the next four nights. We've just walked into town for something to eat, and seen some more elk on the golf course.
