Day 31. Amarillo, Texas.
We packed up the bikes and switched on the sat-nav. 'Show me the way to Amarillo'. Just 160 miles west, via Route 152 and 60, and a bit of the historic Route 66.
We hadn't managed to get an Oklahoma sticker for the top box yet, so headed to Elk City to get some from the Route 66 Museum, and also some chain oil for Jane's bike. Then out west, across the gently rolling plains and bright red soils of Oklahoma. The landscape was a mix of grazing cattle, crops, wind turbines and the occasional small-scale 'nodding donkey' and oil pump.
Entering Texas the speed limit increased to 75mph which meant we noticed the bug splats more when they got past the screens! Very much an oil dominated state. We passed convoys of oil trains as they came into the terminals to pick up more crude. For the second day in a row Jane's bike consumed a lot more petrol than Mark's. That 650cc really does struggle at 80mph!
On the way through Texas we also spotted a couple of cattle ranches. There must have been thousands of cattle at each locations and you could see them as a shadow on the land from a couple of miles away.
On reaching Amarillo we decided to look around the #1 tourist attraction. This was the RV museum and turned out to be a warehouse at the back of an RV dealer. It was actually quite good.
Off to a steakhouse tonight as we're in Texas.
