Day 42. Durango, Colorado.
The 06:00 start this morning was a bit of a shock, but we had to be at Durango Station before 07:30, for our steam train trip. On arrival we were given Stars and Stripes flags to wave, to mark Patriot's Day (in remembrance of 9-11).
The train left at 08:00 sharp and took four hours to do the 45 miles up to Silverton (where we stopped a couple of days ago), climbing ~1000m on the way. It is described as one of the most scenic rail trips in the world, and seemed to live up to the description - particular when it passed through deep canyons, clinging to the side of the cliff wall. We were sitting in the open air gondola carriage so had a good view, but unfortunately weren't the best side for taking pictures.
By the time we got to Silverton, it was raining and the temperature had dropped a lot. We'd opted to return by bus (which only took 1.5 hrs), so re-did the section of the Million Dollar Highway that we motorcycled the other day. We were surprised to see that it had been snowing along some sections!!
The trees had also started to change colour up high and were a glorious mix of yellows amongst the green. The bus driver said that this had mostly happened over the last 24 hrs.
