Hi Guys
When we left you last we were preparing to leave Laos, after leaving Vientiane we picked up our minibus (rickshaw) for the 20km ride to the border. The guards stamped us out of the country and all of a suden the 2500 kip fee to leave had jumped to 3000 kip in a breath!!!
Thai immigration was a breeze then it was on to Nong Khai to connect with the overnight train to Bangkok. All the 1st class sleepers had sold out so we ended up in 2nd class a/c which was fine. Both Mel and I had a top bunk and by 7.30pm the guard was coming down making up the beds for the evening. Both of us were sat like Yoda on our top bunks staring across at one another (me in a crouched position) Mel sat normally chatting away. At 8.30 we decidsed that enough was enough and opted to try and get some sleep. You pull across your curtain and lay in your sleepless cocoon with the bright lights glaring at you. Needless to say at 5am when the guard wakes you up both Mel and I were awake (Mel was bored as she had finished her book through the night) and both of us were praying that we could get in our room at the Guest House.
At 7am we pulled into Huampholong Station and within 2 minutes were whizzing through the empty streets of Bangkok to our guest house. Joy of Joys our room was ready and we dropped our bags in the corner and there they layed for 3 hours like 2 sleepy dogs while we slept. Spent the rest of the day shopping and on the Khao San Road where Mel ended up eating Bamboo worms and crickets for dinner, she said they tasted like monster munch!!!!
Today has been a much less sleepy day, took the boat to the Skytrain then took the Skytrain around to Lumphini Park. The weather was good and we mingled with the locals (it was a national holiday today in Thailand)
Had a picnic lunch by the lake in the park and watched the turtles and Komodo Dragons swim around. They also had duck pedlo's which we could not resist and spent the next 30 minutes whizzing around the lake at one point I thought Mel was going to fall out with excitement as she pointed out all the Komodo Dragons that live in the park and don't seem bothered by the human traffic around them. Some of them were around 4-5 feet in length and really majestic to look at. With a sad reluctance we handed back pedlo number 6 and had to walk the rest of the way through the park back to the Skytrain.
Glad we didn't get too near the dragons as when we got back to the guest house we saw a documentary that said their saliva was highly toxic if you got bitten by one!!!
Went for a lovely Thai meal this evening but alas another early night as we have a 6am start to the floating market in the morning.
Lots of Love
M & M
