Day 50 - Dandenong/Melbourne
Another touristy day is planned for today which includes a trip to the Melbourne Gaol where Ned Kelly was imprisoned and hung.
We head into the city and straight to the Gaol, You get to walk around the entire prison into all the cells etc. It's most famous prisoner was Ned Kelly he's a bit of a ledge round here (you can even buy Ned teddies)
They hung the prisoners right outside the other inmates cells and when they hung Ned they had his mum cleaning the room below so she saw him drop through .. pretty brutal! The building is apparently the most haunted in Melbourne and they do sleepovers on some nights. On the picture i took of his armour theres a weird glow at the bottom .. maybe it was Ned!
After we left we headed down the road to the Ice bar which is a bar .. made of ice. We've been to the 1 in London so kinda knew what to expect although it was a new experience for Jay and Lou. when you've paid your entry fee you get a big coat and 2 pairs of gloves also you get cards which you exchange for your drinks. On entering they close the door behind you and it's like being inside a freezer only colder. The walls, chairs, statues and bar are all made of solid ice. The drinks are served in glasses made of ice too. We had a cocktail and shot in there. You're only allowed to stay in there for 30 mins although i asked the barman how long he was in there for and he said 4 hours!! After about 20 mins we'd finished our drinks and our knees were knockin so we headed back out to the cold windy streets of Melbourne to warm up.
As we walked down the street Rho decided she wanted something Aussie to remember our trip by so what could be more Aussie than a Didgereedoo?! The thing is massive but the shop had a postage/dhl service so we got it shipped straight home. I didn't think it would make a proper didgereedoo noise however the shopkeeper proved me wrong, it was like Rolf Harris had entered the room! (i'm expecting Hatton to try and play it at every chance he gets)
With the shopping done we headed home to change and then food in a Malaysian restaurant called PJs. We sampled Curry puffs for the 1st time and Rhona even ventured away from ribs and opted for a Mango chicken although she did cheat and use a fork. After tea we went to the cinema. We were watching Salt (new Angelina Jolie film) in Gold class. It's a little like the Gallery in the printworks except it's your own screen and it has reclining seats, you also get a button which summons the bar staff and they bring you beers! The film was ok, couple twists but i was annoyed by the end. After the movie it was home and bed time as we have to be up bright and early for our trip to the Great Ocean road Bo)
