Day 45 - St Kilda/Titanic
We decide we should go for a walk around the touristy sights in Kilda today as it's nice n sunny (although still very nippy) We 1st come to the Pier which is pretty long as we get about half way the wind is very strong and Rhona has to hold onto me so she doesn't blow away! At the end of the pier at certain times there are penguins however i think they must of still been asleep as there weren't any waddling about anywhere so we brave the wind and head back.
Next up is the Luna park (Kildas answer to the pleasure beach) It has a massive creepy moon man as the entrance and hasn't changed since it opened way back in the day, Most of the rides are pretty old too, there's a couple roller costers but most of the stuff is clearly aimed at kids so we didn't stay long.
We then hit the main shopping district around here and it has a couple of unique little shops 1 of which was a cafe with a 100 year old cheesecake recepie (you know how much Rhona loves cheesecake) so we sample a bit and to our dissapointment it wasn't that good.
After reaching the end of the street we hop on the tram into the city centre as Rhona really wants to see the Titanic exhibit thats on at the Melbourne Museum. As we're walking up to the museum the wind starts to pick up again when suddenly theres a massive gust which takes our breath away and manages to blow over tables and chairs too (Weather here is mental!) Something we didn't know about was the fact the Titanic exhibit only allows a set amount of visitors in at any 1 time so we have to buy the tickets and kill 2 hours walking around the rest of the museum. It has lots of animal exhibits as well as a big jungle/plant room, Aborigional room, a room about the history of Melbourne and the last 1 was about the human mind/body where it had puzzles and demos of how the brain/organs work in the body, felt like we were on a school trip but suppose it was sommat different and we may of learnt something.
We timed it right as we could now go into the Titanic room however before we go in we notices theres no cameras allowed (annoying!) As we enter we're given a boarding pass with our Titanic passenger names, reason for travel, age etc on it. They have each room setup like the rooms on the titanic there's 300 artifacts in total ranging from peoples glasses to chamber pots! Theres some strange things such as a set of plates/pots that are immaculate (they were in a cupboard which slowly rotted away into the sea bed and it left all the crockery in a perfect line) A slice of the side of the boat that was huge and very thick. They had lots of facts and quotes from the survivors and 1 theme seemed to be all the guys on it that had a family were very similar all of them put their wife and kids on the boats stepped back lit a cigar and puffed away till the boat went down! Apparently in todays money you could travel 3rd class for about £50, 2nd for about £1000 and 1st class would set you back a cool £110,000!!! In the final room they had a list of all the survivors and all of the dead from each class, you could then look at your boarding pass and check if you died or not (We both survived) There was a gift shop at the end but nothing of any real interest in there however the exhibit itself was kool and a bit creepy.
We then realised we had to get back to Kilda as we're meeting Jay & Lou for beers in the Elephant so we head back and change before heading down for beer. It's a bit rowdier in there as it's Saturday and true to form the 1st drunk person to come and speak to us was Irish (friendly but very drunk)
Jason & Louise arrived and we all had some food, lots of drink and a good natter, it's a bit weird speaking to people you know after being away from everyone for so long but makes a nice change. It's also the 1st day of the prem season (hurray) however they show the most boring game of the day (City v Spurs)
I also quiz Jason on the rules of Aussie Footy as he's taking us to our 1st game tomorrow however without seeing the match i have no idea what he means so he agrees to tell me tomorrow.
After quite a few bevvys Jay and Lou have to get home to Dandenong and we're shattered so decide to head up to bed ready for another full day tomorrow!
