Day 118-119
Today was our long awaited adrenaline junkie day. Lorna was nervous about the skydive and Al was nervous about the bungy.
It didn't help that we had to be up at 0600 and it was only 4 degrees. So we were shivering before we had started.
The jump site for the bungy was 45 minutes away and the driver selected music where the lyrics were designed to scare the living **** out of you. We drove past the Kawaru Bridge where the 47m jump is known as the home of the bungy, as it was the first commercial spot. We had chosen the Nevis bungy which is 3 times higher at 134m; this is the highest in Australasia. We said that when we do it we wanted to do it properly.
Once at the bungy site we got our first glimpse of the height, the platform is suspended on a pod between two cliff edges and a cable car takes you out to the pod. Needless to say it was really scary, especially for Al who was shaking like a s***ting dog. We had to put on our harnesses, which was when Lorna noticed Andy who she went to university with....small world.
We had decided previously that Lorna would go first as it was her chosen activity. We then found out that the jumps were in weight order; Al was 6th and Lorna was last.
Groups of 4 went across to the pod, in what was affectionately called the deep fat fryer, as it was made of mesh and you could see right down to the valley below. It rocked around and didn't make Al feel any better. Once in the pod there was a good atmosphere as some people had already jumped and were hyping up everyone else.
The crew were very well organised and we were getting strapped up before we knew it. It was no turning back when they first called Al to the dentist chair. This is where the bungy cord is attached to your ankles and harness. From here it was short hobble to the ledge which was the most frightening bit. Al had previously been really worried that he would bottle it at this point so after a countdown from 3 he surprised us both by going for it with a huge scream. Once back up all he could say was "that was amazing".
After a few more jumpers it was Lorna's turn, or as she was nicknamed by the staff 'Brownie'. Lorna was buzzing from the moment we arrived, although was shocked at the height. Once in the pod and strapped up it was Lorna's turn to sit in the dentist chair and be attached to the bungy. Once on the ledge she was excited enough to have a photo. As soon as the countdown had finished she took a big jump off. Once back in the pod Lorna was on a high and jumping everywhere.
Once back on land we had a chance to view our photo's and video's. Andy had already said that he would give us for free, which was nice, so this was a bonus.
When we were back in Queenstown we had about an hour before we had to sign in for our Skydive.
