Day 125-126
We left Fox Glacier in the morning to travel to Greymouth, which is the largest city on the South Islands West Coast.
New Zealand had been having some freakish weather, in the South Island they were experiencing really high winds. We drove past a lorry with a trailer which had tipped over and there were loads of trees that had been uprooted. At one stage the bus driver stopped to ask another driver if it was safe to carry on. But we eventually got to a calmer area, where we stopped for a coffee break at the craziest cafe in the world. On the menu were Road Kill Possum Pies, and the room was decorated with animal fur.
We arrived in Greymouth in the afternoon and the hostel was the nicest we've stayed in. We decided to just chill out for the day....and get drunk! We did 2 beer trips to the supermarket.
The following day we woke up with a bit of a hangover and went for a walk down to Mawhera Quay where we walked along the river and through a shanty town to the beach. The beach was made up of lots of rocks where we looked for Green Stone. On a clear day you can see Mount Cook from the mountain range, but unfortunately it was a bit overcast. On the way back we saw a Pukeko which is a native NZ bird.
