Bern is so beautiful and chilled. There isn't a lot to do there, so we took it as a chance to relax and rest after doing so much in Paris. It is such a clean town and you can tell everyone takes pride in where they live which is awesome. We were told Switzerland is like living in a postcard and it's so true. It's amazingly beautiful. The water in the rivers is so blue and the grass is so green. I love it here.
As our bus rocked up to drop us off, we learnt that it's illegal to mow your lawn dressed as Elvis. So there went all of my plans. We also learnt that Bern has a big bear pit! With real bears! Excitement levels went through the roof! Not Brendan's though because he doesn't get excited over bears. We saw them while we were walking towards our hostel. We got in some time around 5:30, dumped our bags and strolled about town. In the main square there is a massive chess set painted on the ground with novelty sized chess pieces. A couple of old dudes were having an intense game of floor chess. Across the road there was a free open air cinema playing a documentary about ice. Bear Grylls wasn't in it, so we moved along. We ended up having dinner at a quirky little place along the main strip with fountains, lakes and bridges inside. Flamingos were standing in the fountains wearing gumboots. Not real ones. They were pretend flamingos. And lollipops came with the bill. And they were even red! Nice one Bern.
In the morning we woke up and headed out for some breakfast. We couldn't understand a word on the menu at the little cafe, and the waitress had to stand there and read it to us. Afterwards, we went back to our room and skyped our parents. We're just the loveliest. We went for a walk around after our little Skype sesh. We walked down towards the lake that surrounds the town. We strolled along the lake and sat by it so we could drink some haha. It was so cold that it gave me a toothache. Clever girl I am. We continued along and once we got back to a main street out of the woods, we realised that we had actually left Bern and were on our way to a nearby town by the name of w***dorf (lol). Woops. So, we turned around and headed back towards Bern. Then it was fondue time! I had been wanting to try it so bad, and convinced Brendan into eating a bowl of melted cheese with me. They gave us bread and potatoes to dip into it. Brendan thought they would give us a block of tasty cheese in a pot. That wasn't quite how it went down. It was different. The cheese had a real bite to it and the flavour was strange. Then an old woman came and sat next to me and decided we were the best of friends. She talked SO much. Brendan decided to take photos of us together and not listen to her, so I got stuck being the nice one. She could talk, but not listen very well. Literally. Every time I spoke back to her I had to scream in her ear. Eventually I gave up and opted for the nodding and smiling to everything option. We quickly bailed because I got scared and weird and we were off to hang with the bears!! Hooray!! But first I had to make a stop at the chocolate shop to get on board the Swiss chocolate train. I ate three blocks. No shame. Brendan hated on me, even though I shared with him. He got like 3 pieces so I was pretty generous. The chocolate is amazing. I was like holy crap this is the best day of my life. So, once I had my chocolate, we were able to keep moving and see the bears. They're so cute! I wanted to give them a cuddle, but the whole, them being bears thing got in the way of that. After the bears, we just headed back to our room and chilled out. Brendan watched some revenge online and he was pretty excited about that. It was awesome to just do nothing for a while and relax. We went out again one more time later on that night, and headed to the train station to buy our tickets to Lake Como for the next day. We stopped along the way and Brendy got a beer and I had tequila in a can. I also played with a Swiss Army knife in the supermarket and my stupid small finger got in the way and I cut it while I closed it. Those b****es are sharp! I bled for ages and the cut was tiny. I had nothing to stop it, and Brendy came to my rescue and pulled a receipt out of his back pocket to wrap around it. Thanks Brendy. On the way back from the train station, we got more alcohol and accompanied it with some German sausage. It was amazing! We headed back to our room and chilled before getting a good nights sleep so we would be ready to take on Lake Como.
