Unfortunately we didn't get to experience much of Nice as we both got slammed by heat stroke and were sick for a couple of days. But, it was Arrividerci Italy, Bounjour France!!
On the bus from La Spezia to Nice my ears were aching so bad. We got into Nice about 6 at night and we went straight to out hotel to dump our bags, got kebabs and then went to bed to rest. Our hotel room was really small and cute but weird at the same time. Our bathroom had been built inside of the room and only had half a vent, which Brendan took some sort of weird Brendan offense to. We also had one long body pillow to share. That was some weird s***.
On the bus ride from to Nice, we drove through the French Riviera and past Monaco which was really cool. We saw the massive casino and a s*** load of yachts because Monaco is just a tiny ass country full of rich people who own yachts. But it looks sweet as there, and one day I'll just ride on in on my giant yacht and be all step aside b****es I'm here to gamble. But that's for another day.
On our first day in Nice we went to a restaurant which was located next to where we got out kebabs the night before, for breakfast. I think the place was a little too touristy because they had American breakfasts and no crepes, croissants or baguettes. Boo. It's situated along the main shopping strip of Nice, which we didn't expect to be so commercialized. It reminded me a lot of Bourke Street in Melbourne, trams and all. We spent the mourning just walking around Nice checking everything out and walked along the promenade where the beach is. That part of Nice reminded me so much of St. Kilda.
Because we were both feeling pretty crap, we ended up going to the supermarket and getting some orange juice and shampoo and headed back to our room for a nap before heading out for lunch. On the bus ride in, a steak house caught Brendan's eye, and seeing as all he had spoken about for the past couple of days was how much he missed steak and how long it had been since he had one (2 weeks) we went there for lunch. Brendan did that weird eat really close to his plate thing that he does when he's either drunk, really hungry or just really into his food, so I knew he was digging it. Classic Brendan. We went for a small walk around after lunch but ended up back at our room and had another nap, woke up for a couple of hours, and then just slept until the morning because we felt so s***. So it was a big first day in Nice!
We woke up in the morning feeling a little bit better but still not 100%. Brendan felt a lot better than I did, but he had this dumb chest cough so he kept coughing everywhere. We had this system of sick people looking after sicker people happening, which kept making us sicker before we got better but it kind of worked. We didn't do much in the morning. We had breakfast at a different cafe this time, which was a short walk from the hotel and it was better and cheaper. This time breakfast came with an omelette and a baguette!!! Our first French baguette! It went alright.
We had our first laundry day!! Not really that exciting, but it had to be done. We found a little laundromat about a five minute walk from our hotel and we were like awesome! Then we walked there and realized it was through the black hood of Nice, so obviously Brendan got a lot of looks and I fit in perfectly. After our laundry was done, we headed back for another nap, because napping was our thing in Nice, and then headed out for another walk around, got another kebab and went back to our room to relax, watch some summer heights high and then sleep again of course.
The next morning we woke up ready feeling much better and headed for Avignon!! Although I didn't get to experience much of Nice, I actually didn't mind it. A lot of people told us before we went to only take what you can afford to lose for the day as you will most likely get pick pocketed or robbed, which made me really anxious and apprehensive to the point where we almost cancelled two nights accommodation there. I'm glad we didn't. We saw a couple of homeless people on the streets, but they weren't really aggressive. We never really experienced anything that bad in Nice, but maybe that was because we napped a lot rather than go to the beach or party all night. Atleast by the end of our stay we were rested and the best we had felt in days.
