Nervous Turkey!
Franz Josef to Wanaka
Up early 7.30 set off.
Due to yesterday's disappointment, Arias took us for a drive past another of the glaciers - Fox glacier. It was good to see but nothing like what we had planned to do yesterday and it was too far away. With snow covered mountains and mount cook (highest mountain in NZ) standing proud in the background the 'scenery central' title that we have given to NZ was cemented. This was the backdrop to the mirror Lake Matison. We walked around the lake with some great views, however, the slight wind made the reflection lake, a no reflection lake.
We boarded the coach to head to Wanaka. The journey involved a few lookout stops and many waterfalls.
It's hard to relax in this part of NZ as it is prone to landslides and earthquakes.....as Arias keeps pointing out. They are currently WAITING for an earthquake. The Haast Pass Road is often shut due to landslides or snow or flooding, so we were lucky for to have an easy drive.
Checking in is becoming a race to get into a room with friends but with our precise drill of getting off the bus we ended up with our previous roomies - Hester, Emma, Johannes and Patrick. We wandered to the lake and then around the shops to kill some time before the rugby - Highlanders vs The Chief (Arias' team). With the budget in tatters, the smaller nights out are becoming a challenge to make one drink last the whole night. Obvious Matt is having to change his whole drinking technique that he has perfect over many years.
