Nervous Turkey!
Lake Tekapo - Christchurch
Another really mature way of passing the time on the coach is to take the most horrible sleeping photos of each other. Today Matt gained revenge on Emma with a little help from Hes. Basically wait till someone on the bus falls asleep and notify the surrounding people to get a selfie with the sleeping beauty as the centre piece. Extra points are rewarded for mouth open, drool and the amount of people participating.
The road conditions today were horrendous and we had to stop to put on the ice chains. We passed so many vehicles that had slid off the road but Arias did us proud and got us to Christchurch safely. Walking around the devastated city was surreal to the point where it was hard to even imagine it being a city. It had a really strange feeling as we all wandered around, empty spaces where buildings used to stand. We visited 'The Chairs'. A remembrance area which had a white chair for each person who had died in the disaster. Stood looking at the baby car seats, to wheelchairs brought home what had happened her and gave us a chill inside. 1700 of the 2000 high rise buildings have being demolished and the city is very temporary at the moment. As people were only allowed to re enter the city in the last two years there is a shopping complex made from shipping containers which is a really cool place. It is called quake city. We struggled to even find a supermarket but when we did we made a team curry with Hes and Emma. Although Matt didn't do the Ullah's proud due to Emma's intolerance to spice. It was a beautiful meal none the less. Goodbyes to Jo and Patrick are the main event tonight and a farewell game of V69 was played. It has been awesome traveling with Johannes and he is one of the people who we we will stay in touch with for many years. It was sad to see him go. A failed bar crawl proceeded due to the lack of bars in town. We managed to find an Irish working men's club where a heavy metal band called mammoth were about to hit the stage. The sound check was enough for us to down our drinks and head back to the YMCA hostel. Here we chilled out in our room as this is the last time that we will stay in a room with the funniest duo ever (Hes and Emma).
