Nervous Turkey!
Auckland to Hot Water Beach
A 20 minute walk said the guy on reception, it's straight forward. A backbreaking, shoulder crunching, mind testing, uphill climb with all of our stuff to collect our Jucy El Cheapo car. It's definitely what it says on the tin....a clapped out, browny gold, Nissan Sunny. It looks like it's been imported straight from India. We named him Fernando, Fez for short due to his Reg plate.
200km in 2 hours - Auckland to Hot Water Beach. So far New Zealand is scenery central and throughout the day it got better and better. We visited Cathedral Cove, Stingray Beach and Gemstone Bay which were a stunning array of rock formations form by the South Pacific surrounded by vibrant blue waters.
The main reason for visiting Hot Water Beach was to dig ourselves a hot tub on the beach. 64 degree water rises up from an under water lake that is warmed by an extinct volcano. It's ideal to do at low tide...... 8pm at night. So picture this.
- Pitch Black - Digging holes on the beach with a group of strangers. - The water is so hot you can hardly stand in it let alone bathe in it. - The group dwindles leaving the two of us and some Italian guy who doesn't speak English. - We are in the middle of nowhere. - We both look down to see that this guy has been digging with a huge knife about a foot long. - Matt clutches our spade in case of any sudden advances by the guy. - He suddenly departs into the darkness without a torch and disappears. - After a tense 10 minutes we look to see where the knife was laid and there was an imprint. It was a spade laid on the side so half of it was buried. Phew.
Shortly after a group of Americans joined us. The Stars were out in force to create the best night sky we have seen to date! No moon, no clouds and no sign of any man made light for miles, just a sky full of stars. So we made a hole for our legs that gently mixed cold water into the scalding hot spring, chatted to the Americans who turned out to be our roomies and drank cider.
We met so many people tonight however did not see anybody's face. Quite a funny situation, like a travellers version of blind date. Maybe blind mates?!?
