Today was rugby match #2! We drove back towards Dunedin stocking up with supplies for dinner and some beer on the way! At the campsite, we managed to get a good spot next to the rugby field, despite the campsite being crowded with vans again!
We enjoyed our dinner of sausage and mash (smash!) with gravy - felt like we were eating some proper food again! England were kicking off at 6pm, so we went back to the van for a while and had a few cans, then caught the $3 shuttle bus into town. Our first stop was The Craic, which (surprisingly) was an Irish bar in the Octagon, where we had a nice pint sitting in front of a warm fire!
After that, we headed along the main road and down towards the University - Dunedin has a big student population who go to the University of Otago, and we walked past plenty of student houses - we could spot them a mile off! We were heading to the big student pub - The Captain Cook Tavern (Jimmy gets everywhere over here!). It was a bit like The Southfield back at home, and had plenty of space to watch the rugby and cheap food! We got talking to a group of lads (all Kiwis apart from one 'Pom') who were travelling round the country following the big rugby teams, and an English couple who were living and working in Brisbane, but had come to NZ for a holiday using the money they'd earned packing fruit! And the girl was from Ormesby! So we spent time talking about Gillbrook School and our lives on the road.
From the Captain Cook, we walked down to the stadium, past some more student houses, including one with two girls on the doorstep in just their underwear, cheering for Romania as we went by!
In the ground, we met the English couple who'd sold us the tickets and were sitting in the seats next to us. The game was brilliant, much better than last week's performance and we beat Romania 67-3! in stoppage time, an English fan dressed in Union Jack shorts got past the steward right in front of us and onto the pitch. He dived under the goalposts before being caught and led out. We started talking about the steward he'd got past, saying he'd be getting the scak. Then, after a 'head security' guy arrived and had a chat with him, he was replaced by another steward and had to go and stand in the corner of the ground, further down from us! The crowd around us cottoned on to what was happening, then started chanting 'Bring him back! Bring him Back!'. We were all much more entertained by this than the rugby at this point! After a couple of minutes, the 'sacked' steward got the nod from the head security guy and came back to his post, followed by an eruption of cheers from the crowd. by this point, the game was over!
We headed out of the ground and back to the Captian Cook Tavern, where we watched most of the NZ v France game, but we left before the end to find some food! The weather was cold, windy and rainy so we didn't search for too long and ended up in Subway with footlong sandwiches! We then went over the road to 'The Bog', another Irish pub. We were excited about the band that were about to get going, but they turned out to be pretty average, so we left and headed back to the Octagon. We finished the night back in 'The Craic', with some more live music and lager that tasted like Desparados - mmm! Apparantly Zara Phillips was out on the town too tonight but we didn't see her!
On the way home (we decided to walk), we had to queue to get into a corner shop for supplies, then we met a Kiwi lad who walked some of the way with us, chatting to us as we went. The walk took a lot longer than we expected (about 2 hours, rather than 45mins!) and the clocks had just gone forward one our at 2am so we didn't get to bed until 4:30am! A brilliant night though - we'll miss Dunedin!
