After a FREEZING cold night in the van I got up at 8am to go to the toilet adn found that it was warmer outside! I decided to have a shower early to beat the rush...but it seems that was everyone elses idea too! After a few hours reading the paper and writing postcards, we set off for town on the shuttle bus from the site.
Our Speight's brewery tour was booked for 12:30 so we headed there. The tour was a bit longer, and more informative than the Tui brewery tour we'd done on the north island. We went up in the lift to the top floor and were told what happens at each step, and on each floor, to make the beer. There was even a model of Captain Cook - he gets everywhere! Apparently, he made the first beer in NZ, to give to his crew to prevent scurvy, but it wasn't nice and had to be forced down! The brewery now makes a lot more since the Christchurch brewery was wiped out in the February earthquake. At the end of the tour we went into the bar (only for tours) and had half an hour to drink as much as we wanted, pulling our own pints from the 6 on offer! The guide said noone was counting as it wasn't as if they would run out! So we tried our best and managed to have a good few drinks before the time was up! (See picture of Dave pulling his pint!)
After the tour we went to teh Speight's bar next door and had bangers and mash for dinner as we needed to line our stomachs ahead of the rugby game! There was still a few hours before kick-off so we went to the fan zone in the town hall and watched the first half of Wales v Samoa, before going to a bar for a pre-match drink. We got talking to a local Dunedin couple who let us sit with them, and ended up walking to the stadium with them. Once we were at the stadium we bought our expensive beers and a programme and took our seats. The stadium is brand new and very impressive. It has a roof, as Dunedin has a lot of rain and snow, but it still has a great atmosphere. We were sat next to 2 kiwis who chatted to us throughout the game. We both enjoyed our first ever rugby game, which we won 41-10. There was a man a few rows back with a thick lancashire accent who shouted 'Kill im!' each time we went in for a tackle, which made us laugh!
After the game we had a few drinks in a few bars in the city centre. In one bar we got talking to a kiwi from Timaru who was very pleased to hear that we are here for 3 months and that we really like the county. He even bought us both a pint! Then later on when we were stood outside a bar in the Octagon in the city centre, the entire Georgian team walked in, fresh from the game, with the black eyes to prove it! They were shaking hands and posing for photos with the England fans (not many Georgians about!). Earlier on, 4 police officers had come into one of the bars, just checking everything was ok, and they too ended up posing for photos with loads of English people! That would never happen in Boro!!...We ended up getting a taxi back to the campsite at about 11:30 and got wrapped up warm ready for another freezing night!
