Although I was a tourist in Sydney, it didn't feel like I was really travelling again, but today, getting an international flight made it hit me... we're on the road again!
We were half an hour later leaving than we were aiming for, due to Ian offering us breakfast, but it was still good timing. I liked the fact I saw a Maori man in a skirt as it felt very New Zealand-y. The safety announcement video on the aeroplane was hilarious as everyone was dressed up like they were from Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, and Air New Zealand called themselves 'the airline of the middle earth'.
Yet again we had forgotten to let the airline know Alice was a vegetarian, so all she got for lunch was a roll and a cake, whereas I had rice and butter chicken as well.
Going through passport control and the bit where you have to declare foodstuffs took almost as long as the flight itself. I had some honey in my backpack, which for some reason (because I hate food going to waste) I didn't want to throw away, so I decided to declare it instead. This meant I had to queue up to have it approved, but I thought I'd queued enough already and so binned it, but when I went to go through the normal X-ray machines, she told me I had to queue up anyway because he had already written on my declaration that I had honey.
Instead of getting the airport to CBD link bus, I asked at the information desk the cheapest way to do it, which meant getting a bus to Manukau, and then another one to the city, so we had a coffee at Manukau shopping centre.
After showering and chatting to the girls in our room at the hostel, we went to find a supermarket and then an internet cafe. I had a look at the WWOOF and HelpX websites, since to save money whilst we're here we want to try and get farm work in exchange for food and accommodation, and I've really got into the idea of working on a dairy farm and learning how to milk the cows. Looking at all the places to go in New Zealand has made me feel very indecisive about where I would want to go, and I feel slightly stressed out that we have to make so many decisions now we're travelling! I really like New Zealand so far, but I feel a bit intimidated by all the (very young) homeless people out on the streets, and how forward they are in shouting things out to you.
