After an early breakfast, Heather drove us to Moteuka, where we were getting picked up by the kayak company. We made it just in time as the bus was there when we arrived. It seemed like everyone on the bus was English. We had a briefing in how to use the kayaks (they had pedals to steer the rudder at the back instead of being steered by paddles and we had waterproof skirts which we hooked around the seats), and then we set off. Unfortunately, because we were getting the 4 pm bus back to Moteuka, we had to drop off our kayaks at Watering Cove which is nearer than Anchorage.
What seemed near at the start took ages to actually get to, but we still made it to Watering Cove about 2 hours earlier than the 3 hours it was supposed to take. I was really desperate for a wee, so I ripped off my skirt and was dancing around trying to get my leggings off, before running into the sea where I shouted to Alice "Thank God we're the first ones here!" She burst out laughing, and I followed her gaze to where a German guy was sat... Apparently as soon as I'd said that, she saw him and he waved at her. He was waiting for his kayak tour, although he had been the only one on it the previous days! Watering Cove was very pretty (probably nicer than Anchorage) and I went scrambling on the rocks in the search of a paua shell. I suggested we walked further on to Anchorage so I could fill up my water bottle and then go on to Cleopatra Pools, although we didn't have enough time to go to the pools in the end. Anchorage was where we ate our lunch of sweet potato and butternut hummus and rice cakes, and then we turned back the way we had come to walk back.
Not only had Alice forgotten to put her camera in the camera bag (and instead left it in the bit where you put your bags so couldn't take pictures of us in the kayaks), she had also left her mp3 player in the camera bag when we had left the kayak on the beach so she ran down to the beach, but they had already taken it, although she did bump into the guy who had driven our bus who radioed the people back in Marahau.
We were supposed to have dropped off our kayaks by 1pm, so that we would be back in time for 4 pm, and so we were a bit conscious of being later than that (since we left Watering Cove the 2nd time at 1pm) and walked quite quickly (quite good to burn off all Heather's nice food) and so it would have been nicer to have taken our time as it's an absolutely beautiful national park. I went to the toilet on one beach and managed to find quite a nice mussel shell, which had a few colours in it. At the end there is a river bed where people had placed stones to spell out their names, so Alice put an 'A.G (heart) F.V' in there.
We arrived pretty much at 4, but the bus didn't pick us up until half past, so we had a coffee and brownie/ ice cream at the cafe, where they had a couple of books to flick through, so I looked at the pictures of New Zealand one, and the 'How to do everything' book. The bus driver told us that a 77 year old man had slipped off the track and fallen 10 meters down the cliff. He was coughing up blood and a helicopter had to be called to pick him up.
We popped into the I-site to ask Shirley if she'd mind giving us a lift after she finished work, but she must have had the day off as she wasn't there. We had preplanned to go back to the Bin Inn type place we went to with Heather so we could buy more chocolate covered nuts, but it was shut by the time we got there, so instead brought a boysenberry cider (which is made in Moutere which is near to Dovedale). We then hitched a lift to Neudorf Road with a man who works clearing farm land somewhere near Abel Tasman, but lives in Nelson, and was driving back for the weekend. He wasn't very talkative but said that he was signed up to HelpX, and had both been a helper with his wife and a host. Our second hitch hiking ride was with a lady who was driving a bit further on from where Heather and David live, and again, she was signed up to HelpX and had a girl staying with her for 3 months who was so good at looking after the horses that she was now quicker at it than the lady!
We were absolutely knackered after our day, and David got back quite late from work, so we just went to bed soon after we had tea.
