Kya Travels
By the time we woke up today it was almost 2pm, so we got up and got ready then met Pancho in the common room, where we had a chat and a look at a map and organised our day a little. We went out and walked through temple bar then stopped for a kebab for lunch. When we walked in we realised we'd been there before last time we were in Dublin! Random! After lunch we kept walking to try find a market that Pancho and Nina had gone to the day before, but it wasn't there anymore. We kept walking and went to a gift shop for some stickers for the guitar, then kept walking up the road until we got to St. Patrick's Cathedral. We went around to the front doors, and realised there was an evensong service happening right then, so we went up, told the lady we were there for the service and were allowed to go inside for free and have a seat to listen to the choir and the organ. It was quite relaxing and beautiful, with the sounds echoing off the massive vaulted ceilings and through the beautiful building. It was a Christmas service, so the songs were a bit Christmassy. After a nice song that the three of us stood up and swayed together for (and an epic diminished chord style organ solo ending type thing) we headed slowly back out of the church and walked back towards Temple Bar. We turned off though and took Pancho up to Walton's music shop, as he is a massive fan of the movie 'Once' as well. Darren had a play of a 12-string there, which was much more expensive than ours, and didn't sound as nice, and Pancho played along on an electronic drum set while I wandered around having a look at everything. I had a play of a baritone ukelele, which wasn't as nice as the one I had played last time I was in Ireland, then we headed out when they started closing up, after Darren had a quick strum of a 6-stringed banjo! We walked out and looked through a marketplace and a CD store, then walked down to Temple Bar. We found another music store, which was just closing up, but let us in for a bit anyway. It was full of heaps of Irish folk instruments and all sorts of world instruments. It was very cool. I played another baritone ukelele, and Darren played a dome type of chime/percussion thing from Africa, which sounded very cool. The uke was better than at the last place, but still not as nice as I remember. After a bit we headed off to let them close and went down to the Temple Bar pub, which, as far as I know, was the original pub in the Temple Bar area. We had a beer and a chat there and listened to the band. The place was packed, but it was very nice and Christmassy, with heaps of decorations and even a life size Santa hanging up in one room, who looked like he'd had one too many mulled wines! After a couple of drinks there, we went over to the Old Storehouse for another drink and more music, but after getting really sleepy there, we decided to leave after just one drink and find somewhere with a bit more vibe, so we headed to the Auld Dubliner. The bar was absolutely packed there, so we went upstairs to the other bar, where an Indian man served us, and told us that Murphy's, Guinness, Kilkenny and Smithwicks were 'all the same'! What an outrage! He might have gotten fired if any Irish coworkers overheard that one!! So we had a drink there and watched some more music (oh how I love Dublin and its 'band in every pub' deal!) then decided to head out for some food. We went to an Indian restaurant called Aleena after trying to talk to their street guy who had no idea about the specials on the board he was holding! We ended up getting some pretty delicious food though, for just €10 each. Yummmmmm! Afterwards we went down to a pharmacy where Darren picked up some cold and flu tablets to try ward off the cold he felt was coming on, then we went past the off license for more beers and went back to the hostel. We only ended up having one beer, as we were all pretty wrecked, so we went back to our rooms and I had a shower then went to bed.
