Kya Travels
We got up early this morning after nowhere near enough sleep and packed our things. I headed downstairs when I was ready, and had a chat with the lady on reception about the night porter, who had written us an apology letter, then ordered us some breakfast and sat at the table and skyped the family, who were all at Susie's new place for grandpas birthday, so I got to see the whole clan! I said happy birthday to the birthday boy, then got passed around a bit saying hi to everyone. Darren came down after a bit and said hello as well, then I got in a family photo on their screen, before our breakfast came out, and their huge mountain of pizza boxes arrived, and we said goodbye to everyone. We ate our delicious fry up breakfast, but had to eat quickly as our bus would be arriving in about ten minutes, so we scoffed down what we could, and I grabbed my delicious potato bread to go and we headed out the door. I had another very quick chat with the receptionist while Darren kept a look out for the bus, then I went out into the wind to wait as well. We got the bus to Coleraine, then got some cash out, and bought a snack and drink to take on the bus with us, then headed in to Belfast. When we got there, we bought ourselves some return tickets to Dublin, then went for a walk to find a Northern Ireland sticker for the guitar. We went to one place, which didn't have any, but got pointed in the right direction, but then the guy there just didn't stop talking! He wasn't even really talking, but more rambling! We eventually got out when another customer came in, and went up the road to the visitor centre, where we found a Belfast sticker. (It wasn't as nice as the ones from Derry though!) We bought it and headed back to the station, where we had missed a bus by just 10 minutes, so we found ourselves a seat and Darren played some guitar while we waited for the next bus to arrive in 45minutes. On our way to Dublin we saw some more snow falling outside which was very cool, (there's still hope for a white christmas yet!) then I snoozed for a while. When we arrived in Dublin, we made our way to our hostel, the same one as last time, and got checked in, dropped off our bags and got ready to head straight back out. We walked up Grafton street, and went to the other end of it, where we found what we were hoping for! The famous Christmas Eve busking session! Glen Hansard was playing on stage with a group of maybe 10 other people all squished up there! We couldn't get a good spot as it was already pretty crowded, but we managed to get a spot where we could hear the sound well enough anyway, as they weren't mic'd up or anything. Apparently they'd already been playing for an hour, so we'd missed a fair bit unfortunately, but after a few songs, Glen announced that Damien Rice was there, and he walked through the crowd, straight past us on his way up. He got a few songs in, but then a car pulled up, and half the crowd ran over there trying to get a glimpse of the newcomer, Bono. It worked well for us, as our spot got slightly better, though we were still side of stage and couldn't see too much. Bono made his way through the crowd and got on stage, sang two Christmas songs only, then went back to his car! Darren got close enough to try shake his hand, which he ignored, so he ended up just patting him on the shoulder as he went past. Once Bono had left, our position got dramatically better, until we were just a few rows from the front, and if we had held out our arms, we could have almost touched Glen Hansard! It was so cool! They played for another couple of hours, which was absolutely amazing, and Glen even laughed at one of Darren's jokes! He seems like such a nice man, he literally didn't stop smiling and laughing, even when he broke a string and had to restring in the middle of the set! It really felt like it was just a bunch of his friends having a jam, it was really cool. And one guy played a bodhran and sang a song in Gaelic which was amazing! They finished with a couple of singalongs and silent night, then said goodnight. We had a quick two minute chat with Glen to say thanks, and he told us he was coming to Australia in February, and I got up on stage and got a cuddle and a photo with him! It was an absolutely amazing experience. So when it was all over we walked back down the street looking for some food, but as it was Christmas Eve, everything was closing up. We went to an off license for some wine, beer and snacks for the next day, then went down temple bar to the Indian restaurant, Aleena, that we'd gone to last time. We got a meal, and the waiter there recognised us, and gave us a free glass of wine each for Christmas, then when we finished we headed back to the hostel. We hung out in the common room for a little while chatting to some Californian girls, then went back to the room where I skyped Tiana and Lachie. (No one else was home) It was Christmas morning there so they showed me their Santa pressies, and I had a bit of a chat to them both, but the connection was really ****** (this hostel has the worst wifi!) so I said goodnight not long later and we went to sleep.
