Kya Travels
I set my alarm for 6:45am this morning and headed into the kitchen to start cooking breakfast! I had mushrooms, bacon, tomatoes, spinach with cream cheese and poached eggs. Yummy! Graham came in when we were almost finished, and half asleep went to start making himself his usual porridge! We had to stop him and convince him we were cooking it for him! He was so surprised!! We served his up for him, then took a plate into Saumya's room and woke her up. She loved it, she was so excited, it was awesome. Darren went in to wake Tamu while I served his up, then I served what was left for me and Darren and we all sat down to eat delicious food and chat before they all went to work and we left for the airport. When we finished eating I realised the time, so we said bye to Tamu who was heading back to bed, then went and packed our things and got ready to head off. We said bye to Graham as he headed to work then headed off with Saumya to the bus stop. We got on the bus and made what turned out to be a very packed peak hour bus ride down to the Islington tube stop. Then we had to get on the tube! It was so ridiculously full we couldn't get on the first one, but we managed to just squeeze inside the next one! Someone pushed in front of Darren though, and his guitar neck actually got caught in the closing train doors for a few seconds! It was ridiculous. We eventually arrived at Victoria station, and had literally 5 minutes until our bus departure time!! So we power walked out of the station trying to find the coach station, and ended up going the wrong way before being pointed in the right direction. We finally found it, and were sure we must have missed the bus, but as we were walking up we saw a bus pulling out which said Gatwick on it, so Darren ran up to the bus and the driver said he was pulling in! So we were extremely lucky that our bus was late too!! So we waited for him to pull around then jumped onto the bus for the hour and a half trip to Gatwick airport. We arrived and got checked in then hung out on some comfy lounge chairs while we waited for our gate to be announced, and Darren ended up going for a walk and having two Guinness's with a man in a bar while I waited with our luggage. When it was time, we headed to our gate and got in line where we chatted to an American couple and a younger Californian guy, while we waited to get through the boarding pass and passport checks. We got through to the lounge and chatted with them a bit more before boarding the plane and going through the usual fight for seats on the Ryanair plane, then made the very short flight over to Dublin. We landed in Ryanair style, on time, but bouncing onto the runway, then got off the plane and headed through the airport. We got questioned much more than usual at the passport check about our plans and how long we were there for, then went through, picked up our bags and headed out. We stopped at a shop for a pie and wedges then headed over to catch the bus into the city. It took around an hour to get to the city, but when we got off, we were literally right in front of the hostel, so we only had to cross the road. We got checked in, then went up to our room, which was actually quite nice, then got into bed for a little bit to use the wifi and have a little snooze. When we woke up again, we got ready and headed out. We went to a subway up the road, where I got a flatbread sub, which was actually quite nice, but extremely messy to eat! We were chatting with the guy there for a while, and he gave us a couple of free cookies, along with some pub recommendations. So when we were finished eating we headed off through the temple bar region to find the bar he'd recommended, Sweeneys, and went inside. It seemed like a pretty nice place, but the band there was playing blues, and we were looking for some Irish music, so we headed out and wandered around a bit more looking for somewhere else. We headed back into the heart of Temple Bar, and went into a place called the Old Storehouse, where there was a traditional Irish duo playing, called Trad One. We found a seat and watched them for a while as we shared a drink. There was a flute/pipes player and a guy on vocals and bazuki, which I think is a Greek instrument that was introduced into Irish trad music, which is usually a four stringed guitar style instrument, but this one was an 8-string bazuki, set up like a 12-string would be to a standard guitar. It was very cool. When they finished their set we headed out to grab some cash out, then went to have a look at another pub we'd liked last time, the Auld Dubliner. It wasn't as good, with just a guy playing covers, so we headed back to the Old Storehouse to watch the rest of the show there. I even got dobbed in to get up and sing the chorus of 'Wild Rover' which was funny. When they were finishing their set, we got chatting to a German guy, Andy, who ended up joining us at our table with his girlfriend Isa and we shared a Guinness together as we watched the band finish their last set. When the band finished and packed up, the pub played Greenday's 'Closing Time', so we 'finished our whiskies, our beers', and headed off. We decided to get another drink with the Germans so we went to another bar, The Quays, and got another Guinness while listening to a guy playing pop covers on his acoustic guitar. After a drink and a chat there the guy finished playing and security started kicking us out, so we finished up our drinks and headed off. We said goodbye to Andy and Isa then stopped at a takeaway place for some delicious garlic and cheese chips which we ate on our way back to the hostel. We chilled in the common room for a while watching a little TV (and getting told off for having it too loud) before heading off to bed.
