Well, work is in full force. They just kinda throw you in. Yesterday I went chumming. Look it up.
Unfortunately we saw no great whites. I am sure I will by the time I leave though. Then in the afternoon I dissected a dogfish shark. It was like zoology all over again but with the colorful latex dyes. And without Dr. Eisenhour.... Take that as you will :)
Yesterday was two of the guys birthdays so we went out. We went to a place called Havanas. The ambiance was lovely but the service was slow. I think it is just a thing in Africa. Like "Hmmm how slow can we be??? I bet we can stretch it out and not bring out any food an hour after they ordered." That would not fly at Cracker Barrel. Haha. The food was good though... We were pushing it close to our 10:30 on campus curfew though. I don't really want to get "in trouble" in the first week, but then again... they don't REALLY do much...so whatever.
This morning I went trapping which was actually really cool. Basically you drop traps into the water and hope that they catch a shark. (Little sharks, not great whites...) We set four traps and only one trap actually caught something. But in that one trap were three pyjama (yes that's how it is spelled) sharks. We then tagged them. It's a little bit strange how they tag them. They take this probe and like stick it into the shark and it makes this terrible noise and it really can't feel good. It's like a 20 gauge needle or something. I guess it has been dubbed "humane" but if I were I shark I would be pretty pissed about it. Just saying.
Luckily for everyone on the boat I brought my phone and pulled out the table topics. Remember physics Katie Jo and Randal? Yeah, everyone was a fan.
This afternoon I have to "work on a research proposal." I understand that the program wants us to learn how to do research and all aspects, but the paranoid part of me thinks they're just using interns to find new ideas to study and will take credit. Because of the paranoia I will make mine simple, cost prohibited, flawed, and in no relation to their projects.
I win.
