Alirghty, I have been slacking. The fact that I have to pay for internet in South Africa sucks.
So, update. For my last few days in Jo'burg I went to Soweto, as I mentioned. Hostel Worker #2, whose name is Gavin asked me if I wanted to cuddle and make out. This was after he told me all his woman problems. I am pretty sure he only worked at the hostel to meet women. He admittedly stalked me on Facebook, so hopefully he doesn't read this and get offended.
But anyhow, I went on a safari. Like a real life, drive around the wild safari. I got picked up in Jo'burg at 7:20 on the 28th and four hours later I was at Kruger. The safari included me and two couples.
Of course.
My luck.
One couple, the married ones were from Morocco and Maylasia. The other couple was a bf/gf from Califorina who I think were in their mid to late 20s. Luckily everyone spoke English. It really wasn't that bad being on safari with two couples. They were nice.
You might expect me to say that I wish I was traveling with a significant other.
Good joke.
I'm a lone wolf.
We saw so much. I saw all of the big five, if I correctly know what the big five are? AND I don't so I'll say what all I saw. In the first hour alone I saw giraffes and elephants and some antelope. The elephant literally walked in front of our car. It was awesome. You wouldn't know I thought it was awesome because I don't show excitement but it was pretty cool.
Our guide, Dean, was really entertaining. At first he was really quiet but by dinner he was a chatty Cathy. He was also a little racist... Apparently it's common for the Africaner generation. It was no worse than anything I have heard in Kentucky. Good to know that somethings are worldwide???
Anyhow, what else did I see.... A CHEETAH EATING AN IMPALA. LITERALLY 3 METERS FROM THE VEHICLE. I could see the blood on its face. That's how close I was. Of course, since a cheetah is a cat all I wanted to do was go and hug it but the mutilated carcass that was an impala suggested I should do otherwise.
We saw zebra, hippos, buffalo, wildebeest, some stupid birds, RHINOS, a leopard (in the distance), and dung beetles. I actually took a video of the dung beetle because it was the fantastic.
We also went on a "sundowner" safari. We adventured out and stopped randomly in the park to drink and beer and eat some chips. We saw little baby hyenas. They were so cute. I don't even like dogs and they were adorable.
My accommodation was also....different. We were told that we had been upgraded to the luxury cabin. Well, let's just say they use the world "luxury" quite loosely. It was basically wood in the shape of a square covered with tent canvas. It did have three showers? Two were outside showers and one was inside. It had electricity and running water. Oh! And it's own hot water boiling machine thing for coffee and tea. So that was nice.
We ate at the restaurant there for breakfast and dinner. It was delicious. Maybe it was because I had essentially been living on peanut butter sandwiches in Jo'burg to save money. I actually think the food was really good though. It was a buffet. South Africans seem to really love food. Almost as much as Americans.
The weird thing about the safari and being in South Africa in general is that I feel so disconnected from the world because I don't watch the American news and I don't get on the internet so much since I have to pay. We were just sitting at dinner the second night and Dean told us about Hurricane Sandy. I thought it was a joke. Hurricane in New York? New York being evacuated? Sounded like a big budget Hollywood film. I still don't really know much about the destruction or what not that it caused because I'm out of it.
Today I was off to George. I'm currently sitting in my dorm. I share it was three other girls. Just like college right? Yeeeah, well, think of the room in Nunn or West Mignon or wherever.... Take away the living room and shrink the bedroom by a third and that's where I am now. I'm sure I will be fine. All the other interns seem to be coping well.
The first of the month is when all the new interns for the month come and naturally some interns leave. The internships last 1-3 months so obviously people are rotating. Well, I am came in, alone, no other new intern was here and all these old interns were leaving. People were crying. It was terribly awkward. I am still the only new person here as far as I know. I'm sure it will get better later and I'll have a good time. The initial few hours were just a bit strange. I also can't remember names. I used to be really good at remembering names but now I am clearly turning into my father in this regard.
I was also nervous today that I was going to arrive at the George airport and no one from Oceans Research was going to be here. My flight was a little delayed (because of a toilet problem) and I am actually kinda glad because that meant that if they were late it was okay because I was later. Genius, I know.
But anyhow, that's where I am now. For now....
