Clever Pinterest has been making travel suggestions to me for the last little while and one of the pics that have been popping up in my feed is of some beautiful ruins hovering over the cliff with turquoise waves crashing below. On further investigation, these are the ruins of Tulum and, true to the photos, they sit overlooking the ocean.
We decided to hire bike and cycle go the ruins - about 6 km from where we were staying. On and on we cycled, and then down a wonderful hill until we hit the beach. We cycled past resort after resort until we decided to pull over and check the map. Eish, that lovely downhill we wizzed down, ya, we weren't meant to cycle down it but rather turn left to get to the ruins. Back up the hill for us! :( Now for those that know me, I am not a fan of cycling. I was being really brave with the whole let's-rent-bikes-and-cycle-to-the-ruins thing. The thought of needing to cycling back up the hill filled me with dread and I was reminded once again why I hate cycling. I sucked it up and made it up the hill. We finally arrived at the ruins and took a look around. It was still morning but the heat and humidity were unbelievable, and our sun cream was just dripping off us... yuck!
The complex is on a cliff but the one part (and where the Pinterest photo's are taken) is right on the end. There is a look-out section that allows the most glorious sea breeze to wash over you. We stood there for a good while and cooled down. After walking through the rest of the ruins, we cycled back down to Tulum's beachfront. Yes that meant the great downhill again! Down the hill we flew with laughter and shrieks... and I remembered that cycling wasn't so bad! ;)
We parked our bikes at a cute beachfront cafe and went and enjoyed a drink overlooking the beach. It was way more expensive than our spot in town but, hey, you pay for the view. We cycled on and into the Hotel Zone. Many of the hotels have Beach Bars open to non-guests. We were stumped on where to go but finally decided to go to a place recommended by a friend back home. Bikes parked, we made our way to the lovely deck. We wanted a break from the sun so sat indoors by a huge open window that let the sea breeze flow in. A quick swim cooled us down and the rest of our afternoon was filled with lounging around, reading, eating pizza from their pizza oven and drinking Moca shakes and beers - blissful!
Finally it was time to brave the hill for a final time and head home. We stopped our our local spot for some juices and to rest our broken bodies. We were close to home but the freshly squeezed lime juices gave us a kick of energy for the final leg. I told Kevin that there were many times I didn't think I was going to make it home on my stupid bike... and he told me that I was very brave but maybe cycling isn't for me. He didn't think it was possible for someone to cycle any slower than I was... ha, ha - probably not! It has only taken the man four and a half years of marriage to reach a conclusion I knew all along! ;)
Home. Shower. Bed.
