Thursday 23rd July afternoon. We decided to get the tube to Tower Hill and walk over Tower Bridge to Southwark for a walk along the Thames and to have some lunch. There were lots of people doing much the same thing. The view from the bridge of the Tower of London and of both directions up and down the Thames was great.
We walked past a number of warehouses in previous life which had been converted to apartments and restaurants at river walk level. Most very expensive. We were told that these buildings originally had their own wharf area for the clipper ships to tie up to and that WHARF was an acronym for WareHouse At River Front?? We walked along as far as the muddy creek with lots of old buildings where Oliver Twist was filmed.
We found a cafe right at the base of the Tower Bridge pylon and have a beer and a club sandwich. Very nice and just what we wanted. We had a lovely view of Tower Bridge and it really is a wonderful structure.
We took off after lunch along Queen's Walk which is right alongside the Thames. We were lucky enough to see the Tower Bridge roadway lift up to let another scow come through into the basin between Tower Bridge and London Bridge and we watched it tie up. H M S Belfast is also tied up in this basin and is a huge tourist attraction particularly with kids. Seven decks with ladders and ramps, lots of guns for kids to scramble over.
We headed for London Bridge tube station to head back home as we were going to the theatre this evening and we wanted to rest our feet.
