Today we returned the car, flew Hawaiian from Maui to Kauai and picked up another hire car ...this time a Chevrolet Sonic... something between a Barina and a Cruze. This morning, we drove to Haleakala National Park which contains the highest volcanic crater on Maui. There is an amazing road all the way to the summit and the views are spectacular. We were well above cloud level and had clear blue sky at the summit, which is at 10,023 feet. In the distance on the neighbouring island of Hawaii, we could even see Mauna Kea with its snow cap. Mauna Kea is a lot higher at 13,796 feet but we hadn't been able to drive past ...

This morning we found a little coffee shop for breakfast before driving on to Lahaina Town which we had bypassed previously. Lahaina is a bustling seaside village... Very touristy but historic as well. This was our last morning on the Big Island so we spent the time looking over the shops. Today we drove around the northern shore of the island to Hilo and came back to Kailua Kona through the Saddle Road again.Our first stop was at a very pretty beach called Hapuna Beach which was located in a little bay and had nice white sand and a lot of picnic areas. Next we drove through the green rolling hills of the Waimea area which is good for grazing. There are supposed to be long horned cattle here but we didn't see any. We did see a few sheep ins...
