We arrived in the Kakadu National Park yesterday and set up our campsite at a bush camp called Mardugal. We had a choice of almost anywhere in the park as there was only one other camper there, but only a section of the park allowed generator usage. We found a great shady spot that included a picnic table and a camp fire. The Park Manager is a bloke I hadn't seen for about 25 years when I had lived in Darwin. We had him over for dinner and had a good yarn about the past. This morning we got up early and drove out to Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls. Most of the way is corrugated dirt road but the last part is 4wd only and included sand, rocks and a deep water crossing across the Jim Jim River to Twin Falls carpark. The water was lapping the bonnet of the Zuki but it didn't miss a beat! From the car park there was a short walk to a boat that took us up river toward Twin Falls. It's funny 25-30 years ago we used to swim up the river to Twin Falls, but now they don't allow swimming at all, not even at the Twin Falls Pool due to the possibility of Saltwater Crocs! It's such a shame because the pools are crystal clear and so inviting and a great way to cool off in the heat of the Top End! Twin Falls is absolutely spectacular with its white sandy beach and unpolluted water cascading down the cliff face, so beautiful!! Lochie is so good at walking and rock hopping the rugged trails, he has amazed us with his no fuss approach and he's always asking, "You ok Mum?" Very sweet! On the way out we came across a bogged Landcruiser, they had buried themselves deep and none of us had a snatch strap so we did a lot of digging and putting whatever we could find under the wheels. A couple more 4wds turned up, still no snatch strap, but we eventually freed them. After all that I was very hot and thirsty and very dirty, so we stopped of at Cooinda and had a refreshing swim in a swimming pool there without Crocs! When we got back to camp several people had arrived and one lot have kids so Lochie played till bedtime, yay! Kakadu is rugged but very beautiful with its waterways. It's been quite hot as we expected but we are all coping well.
