Happiness Is The Road
We both slept eventually but were awake before the ship's wake up announcement at ten past five. We were absolutely knackered. The sea was very calm now as we were within Port Phillip Bay. We were both very keen to get off the ferry and be back on the Australian mainland. We got the call to go to the car deck and went to find our little home. She was patiently waiting for us. At last we were off and driving down the ramp onto Melbourne's early morning streets. It was just gone six am and was still dark. This is the first time that I've driven in the dark since getting here. We drove to Coles in St Kilda and were doing our food shopping at half six. We were both feeling spaced out and weird. Coles was moving, all the aisles were swaying! We both still felt like we were on the ferry. We wobbled our way round Coles and managed to get everything we needed. We then decided to drive to Albert Park and have breakfast there. This was where we had parked when we were last in Melbourne and waiting to get the ferry to Tasmania. We found the park but drove in to a different entrance. We suddenly noticed that there were lots of stands up at the side of the road and realised that we were on the circuit of the Melbourne F1 Grand Prix!! They are currently in the process of setting everything up in the park for the weekend of March 17/18/19. We weren't sure at first if we were meant to be there but others were using the road and it was obviously okay. It was brilliant and such a wonderful surprise to stumble upon this. We drove the circuit through the park four times. It's not often you get to drive a Grand Prix in a camper van! We eventually took a pit stop and had breakfast in the park with a great view overlooking the beautiful Melbourne sky line. We sat in the park for ages. It was getting very hot with a high of over 35 forecast. At around eleven we drove over to a camp site that we had chosen in the suburb of Doncaster East. It was quite a drive out of the city. The suburbs of Melbourne are huge and cover a vast area. I've heard that the land area is three times that of Greater London. Tom Tom helped us get there. It was a nice site amongst trees and near a creek. We just collapsed and chilled for the rest of the day because we were so tired and because it was so hot. There was no breeze and it was humid today.
