Happiness Is The Road
Despite being on the main road and being a little drunk we had a great nights sleep. After brekkie we drove down to Sorrento which is almost at the tip of the peninsula. This is a nice town but a little bit pretentious for us. It was full of designer shops and little posh boutiques. We had a walk around though and went down to the foreshore and along the jetty. We then hit the road to Phillip Island where we were intending to stay tonight. Phillip Island is connected to the mainland by a bridge. We were thinking of staying at either Cowes or Rhyll. We just couldn't resist going to see what the Australian Rhyll was like. We just hoped that it wasn't run down and full of vagrants like it's Welsh counterpart! Luckily it wasn't. It is a lovely little town and we stopped there for some lunch. There was a nice looking chippy just over from where we parked so we went there. The woman behind the counter though was one of the most miserable people we have come across. She eyed us up like we were pieces of ****. An absolute shame as apart from her it was a great looking cafe and take away. The chips were great though and we ate them on a bench looking out at the sea. We then had a wander round Rhyll and went on the swings like little kids. There didn't appear to be a camp ground at Rhyll so we headed for Cowes. There was a choice of camp sites here and we opted for the Beach Park Tourist Park. On paper it sounded lovely, it wasn't! The site we got was basically a patch of mud and a tiny bit of mud at that. The couple on the plot next door had pitched their tent right up to our boundary so we had no choice but to put the camper within an inch of them. They looked ****** off but it was tough, we had no choice and if they'd been sensible enough in the first place to pitch their tent the other side there'd have been no problem. They were French so we didn't want their mood. We just shut the van curtains their side and got on with the day. We were right opposite the swimming pool and no one was in it so we went for a swim. The water was cold but refreshing and we had a great time splashing about. The water though wasn't that clear and we could just tell from this and everything else that this site just wasn't cared for much. It had a weird vibe to it. We went for a walk into Cowes down the beach later on. The camp site was right on the beach. Cowes was a nice ordinary place full of shops and restaurants. Much better than the pretentiousness of Sorrento. We had our tea later on inside as we didn't want to sit in the mud and had an early night.
