Namstae everyone (Hello in Hindi)!!
Well we arrived in Delhi yesterday (Sunday), first impressions were good as we expected to get a lot of hassle at the airport from the reviews we read but, we found our transfer fairly easy and got taken to hotel. The roads here are mental, I was sure we were going to crash at least 100 times on the way to the hotel, I would not like to try and cross a road here by foot.
We were shattered when we got to the hotel so decided to take a nap which turned into a 19 hour sleep J least now we are refreshed and ready to go.
So today (Monday) is our first full day in Delhi, we were a bit nervous about walking around outside but decided we were going to go to the biggest shopping mall in Asia which is apparently 5 minutes walk from our hotel.....we didnt quite get there.A tuk tuk guy stopped us and convinced us everything was shut today as its a public holiday....I am not sure I believe him, but as we werent too sure what we were doing we decided to go with him to the "central" shopping centre and then some sightseeing.
Well.....we should have known better after out experience with the tuk tuks in Thailand and their tricks. We arrived at a local Indian shop which sold ladies and mens clothes as well as carperts, which the guy insisted we HAD to buy a carpet, even when we said we didnt have a house he told us to buy the carpet and then we could build the house around it haha, we kindly refused.
Brishay then got roped into buying an Indian piece of s*** (described by Jonny) its a top to wear with leggins but Indian lady style, we were assured this would be good for the temples.....again not sure about this. So, so far keeping within our budget is out the window and we havent even bought food or seen any sights....haha
Our tuk tuk guy then took us to one of the Indian Kings tomb, which was quite nice to see. There were hundreds of school kids going around which seemed to take a fancy to us and kept shouting "hey lady" to Brishay. On our way our we got bombarded by them and they kept shaking our hands asking our names......we are wondering if we are famous in India??
We then went onto Delhi's "nicest" garden......we were not that impressed, with Jonny reckoning the Duthie Gardens in Winter having more blossom. After this the driver took us to some local temples and back to the hotel.
Our impressions of India so far are a lot better than expected, the poverty here is as you have heard but i suppose we are in a 3rd Developing Country.Streets are dirty but we havent been bothered with people at all and everyone is really nice. But, we also think we have only touched the surface with only being here one full day, so who knows what the next 3 weeks will bring.
Have met our tour group and tour group leader who will be spending the next 3 weeks with.2 Americans, 1 Canadian, 1 Italian, 2 Norweigan, 1 Irish and 5 English.Tour Leader's name is Binu who speaks very good english and seemed very approachable.Got aquanted at a Southern Inidian Style restaurant, although it did not serve meat or booze it was very nice. B had an Indian style Pizza and J had a Chippati type dish with an assortments of dips. Away to bed as have an early start, meeting at reception at 4:45am for our train journery to Aggra and The Taj Mahal.
