We started early and spent the whole day today out at Pearl Harbour. The USS Arizona Memorial was amazing - the memorial straddles the sunken battleship where hundreds of men are on 'eternal duty' - I was amazed to hear that any survivors of the battleship can choose to be interred with their fellow crew when they die. From the Arizona we went onto the USS Missouri and toured above and below decks, seeing where the papers were signed to end the Pacific War. There is also an aviation museum on the Pearl Harbour site where we saw a variety of military aircraft and helicopters. To end the tour we went onto the USS Bowfin submarine and listened to an excellent audio commentary as we worked our way through various areas of the submarine. After coming off the submarine we walked through a memorial to the numerous submarines and their crew who were lost at sea - a sobering walk when you think of the thousands of men on this site alone who never returned to their families! It was a big day but certainly well worth the visit.

susan Wow, yes, I knew you'd hit Arizona! It's amazing when you think how many men died on that one day, and then so many more before the war ended. Good to reflect upon it all.
