We arrived in Palm Springs on the 9th and felt the same heat with more humidity. Palm Springs sits in a valley and must be a good wind tunnel judging by the thousands of turbines that we drove through. Our hotel had a lovely pool so we spent the rest of the afternoon there. We met a lovely couple on holiday from LA and got a recommendation to a great Mexican restaurant for dinner - Las Casuelas! The food was fabulous and the Margaritas had a punch! We all staggered home having had way too much to eat!
We decided to have another day in Palm Springs and started the day with a swim before going to Walmart to stock up on supplies and buy chicken and salad for an easy dinner. We spent the afternoon by the pool and ate inside.....before the power went out!!! The air conditioning doesn't work which becomes uncomfortable very quickly and the fridge not working also becomes a problem. Maybe the ice machine doesn't work either... Hmm!
The power was off for close to an hour which made our rooms pretty hot for the night.
We left Palm Springs and took a detour to Salton Sea to see this inland sea which is below sea level - a strange feeling given all the mountains around us. We drove down to marinas as we saw them on google maps only to find town closely resembling ghost towns and areas in disrepair. I suppose the high salt content may have reined what could have been an inland paradise.
Again we crossed a mountain range on our way out to San Diego - such diverse landscapes - this are obviously popular with dune buggy enthusiasts. We stopped for lunch on the other side of these mountains at a quaint town called Julian which was a gold rush town but now seems to specialize in apple pies - we didn't indulge! From there we motored south of San Diego to Chula Vista where we'll stay for 2 nights and explore the San Diego area.
