Spent the afternoon looking around the town and the fortress.

Very nice meal (rib-eye steak) and drinks in the panorama restaurant last night, with live music, for the same price as a pizza in the UK. Early start this morning as the hotel was expecting a power cut at 8.30am. Only 65 miles planned to day so arrived at Veliko Tarnovo by 10.30. Roads surprisingly quiet. Saw a few horse and carts but not so common as in Romania. Bulgaria does seem to be cheaper though. Found a very nice 3* hotel for only £24. Petrol abo...

We've made it through Romania(!) - and survived the mad Romanian driving; crazy taxi drivers; pot holes, bumpy roads, gravel, missing bits of road; horse and carts, cows and goats in the road; mystery power cuts; and everything else Romania has to offer. Everyone we spoke to in Germany and Austria was horrified when we said we were heading for Romania, and even we were starting to have second thoughts. But we're really glad we decided to carry on.
